FAQ

This section is to help you make up your mind, you are not the only one wondering about this and here are the answers!

ARE KAYAKS TIPPY?

No, there wouldn’t be a sea kayak industry if they were! People have kayaked for years without capsizing and unless you want to play and edge to enhance the performance of your kayak, getting your ears wet is not a concern. That being said, you shouldn’t expect to be in a small boat and stay dry forever. Just common sense! If capsizing is a concern, there are some very stable kayaks out there, or go in a double kayak, or face your fear and learn how to deal with a little swimming. In any case, the next question is the real one lurking in the back of your mind.

IF I CAPSIZE, WILL I BE TRAPPED IN MY KAYAK?

Not to worry, when you are upside down, it is harder to stay in your kayak than to fallout! I am not saying it can’t happen, I am just saying you have a better chance to be hit by a falling plane in your garden.  Yes, gardening can be dangerous. Jokes apart, if the thought is stopping you from trying a little kayaking, you’re missing out. We cover the wet exit in any course we teach, and you can master it like anybody else. Another option would be to kayak without a sprayskirt on calm days. I have had lots of students preoccupied by this issue; money back guaranteed if you are not feeling comfortable at the end of the day!

IS SEA KAYAKING PHYSICALLY DEMANDING?

Sea kayaking is not hard on the body. You can kayak at a slow speed almost effortlessly once the kayak is moving. People with no experience at all go on 5 day guided sea kayak trips and have no problem.

On the other hand, as you progress, sea kayaking can become a very good work out if you decide to get some speed and keep it up. Paddling in winds and currents will also get your heart working. So from easy to hard, there is something for everybody in sea kayaking!

WHY SPEND MONEY ON SEA KAYAK INSTRUCTUION?

For one thing, for your safety. Learning self rescues should be foremost, as you can kayak much farther than you can swim! In a swim suit, it’s nice and warm until you are in the water. Also you will have a lot more fun once you are confident and you’ll be able to venture in new areas, go for a full day, play around and come back home on time. If you are thinking of investing in a sea kayak, a course will save you lots as you’ll learn your options, what you need, what you like, and how much it costs. You’ll learn how to be and stay comfortable in your kayak all day, how to adjust the foot pedals and use the equipment, you’ll be in control!
