SEA KAYAKING WITH THE ORCAS

March 10th, 2008

This is about a really nice day trip in the Cowichan Valley area. The put in is in Crofton and we paddled to Maple Bay and back in about 3 hours (no wind and small tide exchange that day).

Just following the shore line, it’s a beautiful untouched area, unless it’s high tide you’ll be able to land in several little bays and have lunch, there was a few eagles, lots of seals, and we actually came across a pod of Transients Orca Whales, which is always a plus. But I can’t guarantee you’ll see them!

The shore follow some land parks, there is 2 places with a jump rope so you can get your swim in and cool down on a summer day. Currents should not be a problem on this trip (you’re suppose to verify that right?) and winds during the nice season will mostly be heat generated winds. So early afternoon you may get some breeze, once again you could land if you want (unless the tide is high).

If you want to make it real easy, leave a vehicle in Maple bay and start from Crofton, this will give you all day to enjoy the trip, maybe do the crossing to Saltspring island depending on your confidence and the weather conditions that day.

In any case, this is a trip you’ll do more than once, great spot to bring friends with you and show them why sea kayaking is so good!!!!!!!

And maybe you’ll see the Orcas!
